The Online Safety Commission is the only establishment in Fiji where you can lodge a report regarding online bullying, image based abuse and other related forms on online abuse.
Online bullying, or cyberbullying is bullying that takes place using electronic or digital devices. This can take place on social media platforms, online forums, digital apps, or online gaming where individuals can view, participate or engage in online communication.
Online bullying may include sending, posting or sharing negative, personal or harmful content about another individual causing serious emotional distress.
The most common places for online bullying in Fiji are social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and Tik Tok. Other places include text messaging platforms such as mobile to mobile texts, Messenger or WhatsApp.
If you or someone you care about is being bullied online, remember that you are not alone. You can lodge a report with the OSC today.
When intimate images are sent, posted or shared without consent of the individual or people in the content, this is known as image based abuse.
Because of the type of online abuse, revenge pornography is also used to describe this type of abuse. The majority of reports lodged with the Commission regarding image based abuse have been by women between the age of 25 and 34 years old.
While unfortunate circumstances illustrate the need to be proactive online, most individuals either know their online abusers to be former partners or close friends or on the other extreme, they have never met the individual offline but have had some type of sustained online communication.
This means that one of the best ways to protect yourself from these types of circumstances is knowing the person that you are interacting with online and having at least engaged with them once offline. It is also helpful to be vigilant about sharing consensual intimate images as we are never in control of content free shared on public digital spaces.
If you or someone your know has their intimate images or videos shared online without consent, it is important to keep in mind that you are not alone, you can report the matter to your nearest police post or to the OSC, support services are also available through Lifeline Fiji at 1543.
